Pap Smear

A pap smear test is a standard part of ensuring your reproductive health. It is a screening test that allows Dr Orji to check for abnormal cells in the cervix and is done in the comfort of his practice room.

Reasons for a Pap Smear

Pap smears are an essential preventative tool in maintaining the health of your reproductive organs. For example, the discovery of abnormal cells in your cervix could indicate various concerns, from a sexually-transmitted disease, such as HPV, to cervical cancer.

What to Expect During a Pap Smear

Dr Orji will provide you with some privacy to change into a hospital gown before requesting that you lie on the examination table. Next, he will insert a speculum into your vagina to keep the canal open while inserting a brush to remove cells from the cervix. The sample collected is sent off to a specialised pathology laboratory for testing.

Once your results are back, Dr Orji will confirm if they are abnormal or not via email. If your results come back abnormal, he will suggest a follow-up appointment or make a referral to a colposcopy clinic for further testing.

When to Receive a Pap Smear

Pap smears can be performed at your routine check-ups. If you are between the ages of 21 and 65 with no current reproductive concerns, then once every three years is perfectly acceptable. However, if you are over 65 or have previously had reproductive issues, you will require more frequent pap smears for monitoring.
