Menopause
Menopause is a hormonal change that affects all women at some point in their lives. Although it is a natural process, the accompanying symptoms can impact your physical and emotional state.
Understanding Menopause
Menopause typically starts between 50 and 55 when your period stops and the ovaries lose their reproductive function. As women age, they start to produce fewer eggs and less oestrogen. Once their menstrual cycle has come to an end, they physically stop producing eggs altogether. This hormonal change initiates a new stage and accompanying symptoms.
Symptoms of Menopause
Many women have a strong sense of fear and anxiety when they begin to experience symptoms of menopause, but it is a natural process that all women endure. Symptoms for each individual may vary, but the most common ones include:
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness
- Night sweats
- Mood swings
- Difficulty sleeping
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Infrequent periods
Managing Menopause
Menopause does not require treatment but rather the management of the symptoms and chronic conditions that may occur due to ageing. Dr Orji is familiar with the struggle menopausal women face and provides treatment and counselling for managing the accompanying symptoms.
Treatments that Dr Orji administers for menopause include:
- Hormone therapy: Oestrogen therapy can help to relieve hot flashes and bone loss.
- Vaginal oestrogen: A vaginal ring or cream can relieve vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and some urinary issues.
- Antidepressants: Menopause can cause mood fluctuations that would benefit from a low-dose antidepressant.
- Other: Medications that treat seizures, osteoporosis and high blood pressure are often administered during menopause.
