Family Planning & Contraception

Family planning and contraception are great tools for taking control of your sexual health and helping you decide when or if you would like to start a family.

Dr Orji provides comprehensive counselling on family planning options, including pregnancy testing and the prescription of hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptives. He is also available to insert IUDs and the Mirena device.

Contraception

Choosing a contraceptive is a big decision, and one Dr Orji is ready to help guide you through. He is trained to provide contraceptive counselling and will discuss all the available options with you while considering your needs.

During your consultation, Dr Orji will provide you with contraceptive options that are in line with what you want and will ask you several questions to understand:

  • How long you want to be on the contraceptive
  • How effective the contraceptive is
  • How it affects your period
  • The side effects
  • Your affordability
The pill

The pill is an oral contraceptive with a unique combination of hormones that help to control your cycle and prevent pregnancy. There are two variations: the pill with a combination of oestrogen and progestin and a progestin-only pill. The pill is affordable, but it must be taken daily at the same time to be the most effective.

Vaginal ring

The vaginal ring is a contraceptive device that you place inside your vagina for three weeks and remove when you get your period. It releases a steady flow of hormones into your uterus, preventing your ovaries from releasing eggs each month.

The patch

The patch contains synthetic hormones that are released into the skin to prevent pregnancy and thicken the mucus of the cervix, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. It needs to be replaced weekly.

Injection

The contraceptive injection contains progesterone to prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs each month. Dr Orji or a healthcare professional administers the injection every two to three months.

IUD

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a T-shaped plastic device containing progestin. Dr Orji inserts the device into your uterus, and it releases the hormone over a long period. Although more costly, the IUD can last for up to seven years.

Copper-T

The copper IUD is a non-hormonal contraceptive that uses copper coils to produce an inflammatory reaction, which is toxic to the eggs and sperm. Copper IUDs are ideal for those who prefer non-hormonal options and can last for several years.
